Venezuela cracking down on crime

5,200 people have been arrested for various crimes since the implementation of Venezuela’s Bicentennial Security Program, according to a 2 June 2010 announcement. It has dismantled 220 gangs, seized 922 firearms, and achieved a 12 percent decrease in homicides. The program plans to strengthen criminal investigations, regulate the sale of alcohol, and fight small-scale drug dealing.
