Hot new beach bar opens in Farallon

E-mail Print PDF

A restaurant and disco has finally opened in Farallon.

A dream come true for four creative partners; Mary Goon, Lizt Jaimes, Mario Batista and Luis Silva - this beach bar/restaurant/karaoke club/discothque has a little something for everyone.

A pool table, foozeball, a small blow-up swimming pool (a real pool is in the works). They even have free Wi FI.

All it needs are a few dart boards and it will be perfect.

The only other nightclub in the area is at The Decameron Resort, which charges non-hotel guests $30 cover charge for men, $25 for women. There is NO cover charge at Makumba, which is just down the road (north off the main road) just past The Decameron. Look for the sign on the main road.

It is not on the beach, but it is close enough to walk to, if you feel the need.

Makumba (which means "sounds of African drums") even offers FREE camping. You heard it correctly - free camping spaces with 12 clean washrooms with showers - FREE, providing you eat in the restaurant.

The food is terrific. Chef Mary Goon is a talented lady. Former owner of a restaurant in Panama City, she high-tailed it out after one of her staff and two customers were shot in a drive-by shooting. This was not some sinister drug cartel assassination - the gang war was over - what else? - a girlfriend. "Time to go. Life is too short" she decided.

She initially wanted something in Santa Clara - but the former Rancho Rio (beside the Farallon River) was for sale and perfectly suited their needs. There is space to build cabanas, and the swimming pool. It already has a huge kitchen, a big dance floor, a rancho style bar on the patio, and the camping/washroom areas which are already built.

I tired a few appetizers which blew me away. Their $4.50 corvina ceviche is really different. It is a creamy, fresh shrimp concoction that will bring me back. It was loaded with shrimp, apples, yogurt and mayonnaise - delicious.

My wife loved the smoked chicken quesadilla. Grilled and packed with smoked chicken and cheese, it is a meal in itself - and being Dutch, my wife LOVES cheese.

The service was fast and friendly, the presentation was excellent and the prices vere very reasonable. The only down-side I could see was the road down to the bar from the main road in Farallon is quite dark. There were a few locals walking at night, which made it hard to see them.

Locals mix smoothly with tourists (locals get half-priced beer) Here's the trick: get to know a local and let them buy your beer for you! LOL.

The place is fun, especially when the karaoke comes out. They have one of the best karaoke systems I have ever seen, and I have  lot of experience in karaoke. JBL speakers, Mackie mixers, Computer song storage - they have thousands of English and Spanish songs.

Yolanda belts out a Janis Joplin tune.

We all commented on how great the music was during dinner. We knew every song and the mixing was excellent - .   A great DJ- Armando - coupled with the most sophisticated lighting and laser systems outside of Panama City makes Makumba a happening place. Come for lunch or dinner and stay for the dancing. Open to 6 A.M.

The Decameron Villas were consulted when they placed their speakers so as to not disturb their neighbors.

Good food, fast service, great prices. The right bar at the right time in the right place - I predict Makumba will do very well. Groups welcomed: Call 993- 2673
