Inexpensive Medical Insurance for Tourists to Panama
The National Assembly approved a measure to offer insurance to all tourists who enter Panama through Tocumen International Airport. The new law will provide tourists with up to $20,000 of coverage during the first 30 days of stay in the country.
The insurance covers medical expenses incurred resulting from an accident in Panama, illness contracted in Panama, medical transport, emergency dental work, pharmacy costs and legal assistance in the case of lost or stolen documents. It also covers up to $20,000 in the event of accidental death.
Panama is one of few countries that provides this service to visitors.
Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) director Salomón Shamah stated that the insurance will cost $2 per tourist, and will be included in a tourist’s travel package.
It is unclear at this time if an extention of the insurance will be made available to tourists extending their stay in Panama beyond 30 days.
